I came to this from finance. One dog changed that — the kind of connection that makes you reconsider what you're doing with your life. I left in 2022 and completed the six-month program at Tarheel Canine Training School, certified in police dog training. I chose that route deliberately. Police work asks the hardest thing of a dog, in the worst conditions, with no room to be wrong — and a trainer who has worked there finds an aggressive pet dog familiar rather than alarming. In 2023 I went to Woof Dogs and worked with hundreds of clients: every breed, every age, every temperament, and a steady run of dogs other people had already written off. That's where I learned behavior — not just commands, but why a dog does what he does, and what has to change underneath before anything on the surface will hold.
Most people who call me have already tried something — a group class, another trainer, or a video off TikTok or Instagram. The videos rarely work, and that isn't your fault. Those trainers copy each other, and a clip of a technique working on someone else's dog tells you nothing about whether it fits yours. The dogs I work with aren't bad dogs. They learned something that worked for them, and no one has shown them anything better. A dog who growls over his bowl isn't being dominant — he's guarding a resource, because at some point guarding it worked. A dog who lunges at the end of the leash isn't disobedient — he's learned that making a scene creates distance, and it has never failed him. That's what rehabilitation means: not suppressing the behavior, but changing what the dog believes he needs to do. The bone stops being worth fighting over. The other dog in the house stops being a threat. The stranger walking past stops being a problem to solve. I teach obedience too — sit, place, heel, a recall that holds under distraction — and every dog I work with leaves with it. But obedience is the structure, not the cure. A dog who can hold a down-stay while still believing the world is against him hasn't been rehabilitated; he's been managed. I want both: the manners, and the dog who no longer needs to fight.
